It’s the news we’ve all been waiting for. The Downtown Ithaca Alliance has scheduled the official Commons Re-Opening Festivities for August 28-29.
Why did it take so long?
The Commons construction project was originally set to be completed by July 31 of last year. Then, the deadline was pushed back to November. Construction crews blamed the Simeon’s crash and problems with NYSEG as two major obstacles in construction delay.
Ithaca’s harsh winter further delayed construction on the site as the cold weather made it impossible to pave.
What can we expect?
In his sweeping speech, Ithaca Mayor Svante Myrick said the new Commons will be the best downtown in the United States.
“Generations will have a jewel — and that jewel will have been worth the cost.” -Mayor Myrick
According to Myrick, the new Commons will draw people from all over the state and from other states. This will benefit the local businesses situated along the Commons.
No dogs allowed
Although you can expect to enjoy the Commons by the end of summer, you’ll have to leave your pup at home. The proposal to allow dogs onto the renovated Commons was rejected by the Ithaca council in a unanimous 9-0 vote. Woof.
